The etiology is multifaceted with links to genetic factors, personality, psychological distress, environmental triggers and peripheral musculoskeletal function. Central brain and spinal cord 'top-down mechanisms dominate the pathophysiology of FM. We review the disordered pain-related neurological processes that are present in FM and discuss treatments that target these relevant mechanisms. © 2011 Future Medicine Ltd. | DOI: | http://monash.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/10.2217/ijr.11.41 | ISSN: | 1758-4272 | URI: | https://repository.monashhealth.org/monashhealthjspui/handle/1/30274 | Type: | Review | Type of Clinical Study or Trial: | Review article (e.g. literature review, narrative review) |
