Date of Publication: December 2007. | Abstract: | Recent advances in computer image analysis techniques allow more accurate quantification of kidney pathological lesions, which are identified by histological staining or immunohistochemistry. This article provides a detailed description of the basic techniques for quantifying these lesions in digital images of light microscopy using Image J software, which is freely available over the Internet. The methods discussed include calibrating measurements, applying scales to images, assessment of object size and thickness, cell counting and point counting, and analysis of area stained. Our explanations indicate how these methods can be used to evaluate glomerular hypertrophy, tubular and vascular injury, accumulation of inflammatory cells and myofibroblasts, deposition of extracellular matrix, and the development of renal scarring. © 2007 The Authors. | DOI: | http://monash.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/10.1111/j.1440-1797.2007.00855.x | PubMed URL: | 17995580 [http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=17995580] | ISSN: | 1320-5358 | URI: | https://repository.monashhealth.org/monashhealthjspui/handle/1/31840 | Type: | Article | Subjects: | computer program extracellular matrix histology *image analysis immunohistochemistry inflammatory cell *kidney disease/di [Diagnosis] kidney injury/di [Diagnosis] kidney tubule damage/di [Diagnosis] microscopy myofibroblast priority journal kidney hypertrophy/di [Diagnosis] article cell count kidney tubule damage / diagnosis microscopy myofibroblast priority journal kidney hypertrophy / diagnosis *kidney disease / *diagnosis inflammatory cell immunohistochemistry *image analysis article histology extracellular matrix computer program cell count kidney injury / diagnosis |
