Abstract: The role of sex hormones in the pathogenesis and course of rheumatic diseases has long attracted attention. Hippocrates highlighted this when he stated 'Eunuchs are not affected by gout...women are not troubled with gout unless menstruation is deficient'. This article reviews the current knowledge of the influence of sex hormones on rheumatic diseases.
