Abstract: Background: In light of the recent publication of the World Psychiatric Association's first Code of Ethics, and as the 50th anniversary of the American Psychiatric Association's Code of Ethics approaches, it seems timely to update members regarding the Codes of Ethics in psychiatry - at home and abroad. Objective(s): To review key moments in the development of Codes of Ethics in psychiatry and to offer an analysis of their current role in the profession. Method(s): The presenters include some key international figures in the field of psychiatric ethics, who will bring to bear their decades of involvement in the development of Codes of Ethics in psychiatry. These firsthand perspectives will be supplemented by a review of published literature on the evolution of Codes of Ethics. Finding(s): The innovation of an international Code is a promising development that helps to articulate the fundamental values that underpin good psychiatry across the globe. The historical evolution of Codes demonstrates a growing awareness of the importance of ethical excellence in psychiatric practice, and the ability of our profession to adapt to significant changes in socio-moral norms. Conclusion(s): Codes of Ethics play an important role in our profession, anchoring it in moral concepts and principles that support a high standard of practice.
